Duke Ellington buscava diferenciar-se de les altres big bands mitjançant la sofisticació. Juan Tizol Martínez era un dels trombonistes de la seva banda. Era de Puerto Rico i va ser el responsable d'introduir en aquesta orquestra (i, per tant, als Estats Units) sonoritats que llavors es consideraven exòtiques. Ho va fer amb temes com Moonlight Fiesta, Jubilesta, Conga Brava o Carnaval. Aquests temes poden ser considerats precursors del que posteriorment es denominaria jazz llatí.
